Break away from FIFA!
World Cup: Former FA chief David Bernstein calls for boycott
The English Football Association has been urged to lobby Uefa for a European boycott of the next World Cup - unless Fifa implements meaningful reform.
...
Similar views have been expressed by German Football League president Reinhard Rauball, who suggested Uefa could leave Fifa if the findings of the two-year investigation into corruption claims are not published in full.
I have been dreaming about this really, and however unrealistic it may sound, I am glad that someone at some senior position says something radical like this publicly. FIFA is so corrupt that it is impossible for it to correct and fix itself. Even if Sepp Blatter steps down (he won't), the corruption culture is so deeply embedded in the organization that the only way to change it is to take it apart and build a new one from scratch.
I have given some thoughts about this, actually. Obviously England cannot do it by itself. But if we can get the western Europe together, plus a few civilized countries like USA, Japan, etc, they should try to form a breakaway faction and run their own World Cup or whatever other tournaments at country or club level. There is no reason why FIFA should have monopoly in running world football. Let it face some competition. Essentially the world will then have two football governing bodies, a civilized one consisting of the above mentioned countries, and an uncivilized one containing, well, you know who those countries are. Let the uncivilized one have whatever bribery or corruption they like, as long as it is contained within themselves and don't affect the civilized world. Hopefully more countries will switch sides over time.
Of course there will be huge difficulties, for example FIFA will not allow "their" members' national players to play for Europe's clubs... but at the end of the day, it is about who has more financial bargaining power. Which of the following two is a bigger loss: the Premier League / Champions League losing some South American or African players, or FIFA / World Cup losing Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, France, England, and so on? (and don't worry, those South American or African players will find a way to change their nationality, as we all know already).
I know, it is just my dream, is it? Will someone have the courage to try to pull it off?
PS. And I forgot to mention, the civilized one can then do sensible things like using video replay technology and so on...

From the first episode it seems it will be a pretty good TV programme, even though probably 90% of it is going to be completely made up. But at least the real part (as written in the article) gives people a feeling of hope in this dire world.

Doctor Who 8.1 Deep Breath: Some Unorganized Thoughts
- I think they are trying too hard to tell us "I know the new Doctor is old but you should still watch the show". A majority of the episode is pretty much lecturing us right in the face about this, especially Vastra's speech. I mean, if you don't have confidence about this then maybe you shouldn't cast Peter Capaldi in the first place.
- In fact, the audience numbers seem to be dropping consistently over the last few seasons which is of some concern. Somehow, Steven Moffat can make Sherlock 'event TV' but not this.
- The episode is quite philosophical, about change. The droid, just like the Doctor, has changed faces so many times, and there is the question of "is it still the same broom" not just about the droid but the Doctor. When the Doctor holds up a plate in front of the droid and suggests that he may not even remember where he got that face from, the camera is actually showing the Doctor's face on the reflection, which is a subtle nice way to express the point.
- As for the big debate, my opinion is that the droid jumped himself. (Not that it makes much difference - either the Doctor pushed him or talked him to death, which is pretty much the same, plus the Doctor clearly killed many people before - so I don't know what the fuss was about.) My take is that: the droid repeatedly asks "How would you kill me ", as if he has wanted to kill himself for a long time but unable to do so because of its basic programming; the Doctor then make him realize that he's changed so much that he's no longer bound by that. When the Doctor says one of them is lying about their basic programming and they know who that is, the droid's "Yes" was very emotional, signifying this.
- There are more than the usual number of Scottish independence jokes, from eyebrows "independently cross" and "set up their independent state of eyebrows" to "still don't think you've got a vote".

Moffat's Sherlock 3 and Doctor Who
Anyone who watches both these programmes cannot fail to notice the parallels. From the obvious
to the equally obvious
Once you realised this it is obvious how the rest of Sherlock's plot is going to be. Namely, this Mary and her baby isn't real, it's only a goo replica; the real one has already been kidnapped. The baby girl is then trained into apsychopath dominatrix called Irene Adler and sent back in time to defeat Sherlock. The plan almost succeeded, only for her to fall in love with Sherlock. As for how Sherlock faked his death, obviously none of the explanations given in The Empty Hearse is correct; the real explanation is that the one falling off the roof is a robot version of him...
OK, seriously. I think the latest episode, The Sign of Three, has unfairly got quite some stick. True it isn't your typical Sherlock episode, but to say it has no crime investigations, turned into a sit-com, etc, I cannot agree. The episode is very carefully crafted together, where all the apparently unconnected ends are tied up together at the end, like how a proper detective story should be. The way that the (attempted) murder stories were interwoven into the best man speech is fascinating. There isn't a more ingenious way to put together murder detective stories, a best man speech and exploration into the character's development into one episode really. (I do feel the stag-night scenes are a bit too long, though.)
The two cases that Sherlock picked to describe, the Bloody Guardsman and the Mayfly Man, he only intended to use them to illustrate how good a man John is (and they served this purpose nicely); he did not know at the time that it actually is related to what is happening right at the wedding, and the fact that they are (though a very unlikely coincidence in reality) is surprising to the audience after 70 minutes of "sit-com". The best man speech (gee I can only find a cached version!), by itself, is an excellent one even if you remove all the flashback scenes. Particularly the way he says all the bad things about marriage, bridesmaids etc only to turn it round a moment later. (The crying scenes are too fake though... is it really that moving?) The writer, Steve Thompson, should be congratulated about that. (I know this is written by all three of them, but one could assume, at least initially, that this episode is meant to be written by him?) (Btw, his Doctor Who episode, The Curse of the Black Spot, also got some heavy stick but I also thought it was unfair: the surprising reveal that the other thing is a medical ship in another dimension is very interesting.)
I hope time will do it justice, and that this episode will go down TV history as a classic - not necessarily because it is "the best" but because of its uniqueness.

他還說 strive to find time to be an effective and supportive husband and father, 不知和 HKU 或烏干達的 Mission 有何關係?「顯然曾向烏干達求職」這個解讀,恐怕很有商榷餘地。
... Bristol(布里斯托)大學和港大的比較,媒體已有述及...
(Mission
他還說 strive to find time to be an effective and supportive husband and father, 不知和 HKU 或烏干達的 Mission 有何關係?「顯然曾向烏干達求職」這個解讀,恐怕很有商榷餘地。

Dominoes
Dominoes Toys to close as hunt for buyer fails
Sad news. You don't have a four-storey shop only for toys these days, never mind an independent one. Over the years I visited it many times, though mostly just looking and only bought a couple of things.
I went to the sale one day late. I wasn't expecting to see any lego worth buying, but was a little bit surprised that almost all lego are gone, even those that I consider not worth buying. The only exception is the Friends series. Which just shows how big a failure it is in TLC's continued attempt to be politically correct and make "girly" things.

Saving A Primary School Teacher in Hong Kong from Political Persecution
(Original article from the petition linked below; the following is my extended version.)
Ms Alpais Lam Wai-sze, a primary school teacher in Hong Kong, is being politically persecuted for merely saying "what the fuck" upon witnessing the injustice routinely carried out by Hong Kong police.
(From Cuson Lo)
On July 14, a pro-communist group attacked a Falun Gong stall in the street. While very few people in Hong Kong like Falun Gong, Hong Kong citizens recognize their freedom of expression. Yet the police, clearly politically biased, routinely turn a blind eye to such violent incidents which has become a regular scene. On this occasion, Ms Lam, who happened to be passing by, stood up against the police's inaction (the police cordoned off the two groups and let the violence continue.) Her action of defending justice was followed by harassment: huge banners were left at her school calling for her dismissal; the "chief executive" of Hong Kong, C. Y. Leung, asked the Education Bureau to file a report on Ms Lam’s case; and the Regional Crime Squad of the police received order to investigate into Lam’s case. All for merely saying a WTF.
We condemn such government organised, politically motivated persecution and harassment against an individual. Some Hong Kong people are again (following the Chinese raid of baby milk powder in Hong Kong) trying to seek international attention by petitioning on the US Government website.

Baby Hunger Outbreak in Hong Kong, International Aid Requested
Local parents in Hong
Kong can hardly buy baby formula milk powder in drugs stores and
supermarkets, as smugglers from mainland China storm to this tiny city
to buy milk powder and resell for huge profits in China. Many retailers
stockpiled milk powder and are reluctant to sell to local parents as
they can sell their stocks to mainland smugglers instead for
huge profits. Countries like Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and
New Zealand exercise rationed sale to tourist buyers from China but the
Hong Kong government frame the situation as a matter of "free
trade" and refuse to exercise its legal power to stop
cross-border smuggling. The Hong Kong government is even planning to ration milk powder supply to its own citizens while letting Chinese smugglers transport unlimited quantities of milk powder to China with the cooperation of corrupt Chinese customs officials.
We request international support and assistance as babies in Hong Kong will soon face malnutrition if the situation continues. Emptying Hong Kong's baby milk powder reserve is one of the tactics used by communist China to cleanse Hong Kong from its locals. Hong Kong's future generation will be virtually starved out. After the communist take-over of Hong Kong in 1997, this city has the lowest birth rate in the world, and the biggest immigration flux from the mainland to "replenish" the "natural" loss of locals. Very soon, mainland Chinese immigrants will out-number the locals. That is what happened in Tibet, decades ago.

2012 summary:

I respect your belief,

If it wasn't dead before, it is now.
The Dark Side clouds everything. Impossible to see, the future is.
Yoda, Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones

As close to TV perfection as you can possibly get
I recently found out that TVB Pearl is showing BBC's Sherlock. Okay, you are two years behind us here but at least you show some good taste. Except they showed the first episode on the first day of the Chinese New Year. Who on earth is going to watch it? What a waste.
Back here we just finished Series 2. I wasn't in the UK when Episode 2.1 aired and somehow I'm not bothered to find and watch it... possibly because I watched 2.3 live and was somewhat disappointed by it. In fact by now I've completely forgotten the plot except the last 10 minutes. But after seeing some clips on youtube, I eventually watched it.
And this is what Steven Moffat can do. At his best, nothing, absolutely nothing on TV can beat him. Or Hollywood.
10 remarks on Sherlock 2.1: A Scandal in Belgravia
1) Small connections.
You think those little cases at the beginning were irrelevant funny jokes? True Moffat believers would have seen that coming. (Sorry, I didn't.)
2) Dress 3.
Irene Adler choosing her dress and decided to go naked. The day before I watched this, I was watching an episode of Coupling (another Moffat production, hugely underrated), where Jane chose "Dress 3". I don't mind recycled ideas, as long as they are brilliant.
3) The direction.
One highly acclaimed aspects back in the first series is the innovative camera work and directing, with on-screen text showing the SMS messages or what's going through Sherlock's mind. Not surprisingly it is retained, but there are other excellent work: the cutting between the car backfire noise and the smoke alarm, a freezed murder scene overlayed with Irene's room, and the cutting between "God save the Queen" and Christmas songs with Sherlock's violin. Though I suspect most of this is already specified in Moffat's script.
4) More little connections.
The cigarette lighter from the official to set off the fire alarm. The fire alarm to reveal the safe. The naked scene to let Sherlock know the safe's code (and that he does know where to look.) Bond Air. How the murder case relates to the main plot. And "because I took your pulse". When Moffat writes well, everything come together in the most unexpected but the most satisfying way.
5) One-liners.
"How did Sherlock recognise her from... not her face?"
"And exactly how many times did he fall out of the window?"
6) Poor Molly. Poor poor Molly.
7) The climax.
I think quite some people may have guessed the passcode of the phone before seeing it (I don't know whether I would - I had already seen the resolution...) Though they rather cleverly used mostly numbers in the failed attempts to mislead the audience while at the same time did include a B to show it can be a letter. For those who didn't see that coming, they must feel like they have just witnessed the most clever moment in TV history. Yes, this is again what Moffat can do. Except he does that regularly. Last time it was "something borrowed, something blue" in Doctor Who.
8) Naughtiness.
You think the ringtone is just another way of sex-ing up the story? Even that serves a final plot point. And plenty of things for Benedict Cumberbatch fangirls to scream at.
9) The music.
Irene's theme, particularly how it is timed to the reveal of the passcode and the "beheading". Stunning.
10) The end.
Quite some people don't like the addendum, considering it unnecessary and worsens the episode. History proves that such additions by Moffat usually turned out to be well-received (e.g. Doctor Who: Forest of the Dead). Ok, Sherlock infiltrating terrorists in Karachi is a bit silly, but after what we've seen in this episode, we all want Irene to survive, don't we?
So here it is.You think you are watching detective stories? No, not just that, it is comedy, tragedy, romance, everything. I always assume that Steven Moffat is an evil genius. Thank you for the final proof. A shame that his work is not more widely known.

This city is dying, you know...

This city is dying, you know...

The complete River Song stories timeline
Right, I know I'm sticking my neck out there, but here it is: the River Song timeline as we know it.(Warning: large file)
I know, Rory isn't there. I may add him later. Also The Eleventh Hour doesn't feature River Song, but I somehow feel it should be here. (Perhaps it should be called "Steven Moffat series 4-6 stories timeline" instead.)
And apologies for the poor graphics...
